We’ve found three new medium sized bird toys that African Grey Parrots and similar sized birds will love. We want to help you choose bird toys that your medium sized parrot is likely to use. What makes a good African Grey or sized bird toy?
- Size: If you watch your medium parrot yawn, you realize that it opens it’s mouth about 1 1/2″ – 2 1/2″. Huh? Well, that’s about the size you want wood chunks and beads to be on an African Grey bird toy. Your bird can hold this sized wood chunk in it’s foot and get in a good, gratifying bite. If the bird toy parts are too small, it poses a choking hazard and it is too small to hold in the foot. Likewise, if the bird toy parts are too big, your bird can’t handle it with it’s foot or get a satisfying bite.
- Wood Density: Your African Grey or Amazon parrot will appreciate chunky wood parts made from moderately soft bird safe woods such as pine and maple. If the wood is to soft, like balsa wood, your bird will bite off larger pieces and the bird toy won’t last very long. Similarly, a medium sized parrot doesn’t have the beak strength to crack hardwood bird toy parts so the bird toy will essentially be useless and a waste of money.
- Variety: Curious masters of foraging, African Grey Parrots love bird toys that offer a variety of textures. How do we know this? Well, lets just say,” Smokey, Sierra and Timmy,” our Congo and twin Timneh African Grey Parrots. We look for bird toys that have a minimum of two textures and shapes, but the more the merrier. Medium sized birds love cotton and sisal fibers, moderately soft wood parts, plastic beads and chewy leather. And, what bird doesn’t love a bell on their bird toy?
So, it’s VERY early in the year but, so far our (Smokey, Sierra & Timmy’s) choice of best African Grey Bird Toys are……
